Kadeem Johnson - LookBook.nu Spotlight
Found another diamond in the rough this week for our LookBook.nu spotlight. This week we're bringing you Kadeem Johnson, a freelance photographer and student from the Bronx. What interests me most about Kadeem's style is his use of distinctive and vintage-style clothing and accessories. A fascination for artistic and unique items, Johnson's looks make use of rosary chains, peace sign pendants, stacked bangles, and exotic bracelets. His looks are never without a hat, and Kadeem's hats of choice include driving caps and fedoras. His clothing is unfettered and allows him to be stylish without having to be conservative. His Wordpress blog, K.john_LaSoul, is a collection of his fashion photographs, usually consisting of images of what he is wearing, and like his style isn't cluttered or overly dramatic. It is simple, yet creative, and functional, yet inspiring. Also a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Kadeem Johnson appears to be quickly gaining speed in his career and creative reach. Check out more of Kadeem's looks on his profile here.

Allen W. - LookBook.nu Spotlight
Medium-blue denim jacket with rolled up sleeves and bleach stains too gratuitous to be machine-made, a white Vampire Weekend t-shirt with a centered photograph, a self-made Pac-Man logo pin a la Dee and Ricky, classic sneaker-style buckle shoes from Aldo, studded bracelets on the arm, and the delinquent face coupled with a high-top fade that conjures images of the incorrigble youth from Boyz 'N Tha Hood. These elements make up the look "Contra" by Allen W. and his urban style definitely interested me enough to present him to you readers. Only 16 and a fashion model and photographer from Washington D.C., Allen's appreciation and ingenuity in fashion makes it hard not to see how LookBook.nu, an online font of fashion inspiration from real people, has an eye for catching ordinary people with extraordinary style. Check out this look and others on his LookBook.nu profile here.

Don't Forget To Breathe - Spotlight Marquis Engle
Illusion is the first of all pleasures. You've heard me say I'm highly attracted to highly attractive people. Well I think I've got one people. Mix Gaga's style, Alexander McQueen's inspiration, and Janelle Monae's effervescent charm and you get this guy. Never before have I met someone whose sheer creativity, exuberant beauty, and most of all design savvy used to form so elegant and aesthetic an artifice. Born from the school of hard knocks in Cleveland, Ohio, inspired by the elements I so adore, The Flashy Life, and nourished by the creations of avant-garde tastemakers Lady Gaga and Beyonce, Marquis Engle, 19, both amazes with the children of his imagination and also with his showstopping, enviably photogenic face. I don't know what I am compelled more to do; to ask him to design a sickeningly cutting edge blazer for me, or somehow magically trap him in a glass bottle like a boat and cherish him like a limited edition Barbie. One thing is for certain; there are no wires, strings, or plastic attached to Marquis. Blazing his own trails in the most ambitious and flashy way possible, he's found his way into my heart as another one of my many muses and inspiration.

Pretty Police - Spotlight Amori Herrera
All the pretty boys in the room stand up...and bow down to Amori Herrera, the 19-year-old model originally from Detroit, Michigan who has resided in Louisville, Kentucky from 9 years old to the present. An exceptional diamond in the rough, Amori speaks to the story of many young adults building the foundation for their dreams from the ground up. A student at Paul Mitchell Hair School, Amori definitely has an eye and a blessing himself for beauty. Sporting a highly photogenic and meticulously tended face with enviously poreless golden brown skin and eyebrows so sharp they could kill, Amori's definitely looking to milk his beauty for all it's worth with his modeling work at Heyman Talent Agency, a group known for producing refined and unique models, actors, and talented individuals. An extreme fashion aficionado at heart, Amori speaks on his personal style saying, "My personal style is real preppy with a twist..but I like looking different and sexy at the same time. I'll try anything once". When it comes to staying in shape, Amori's motivation definitely and clearly stems from those of aesthetic reasons. To him, life is a simply a giant press conference; it's full of flashing lights, adoring fans, meeting new people and letting people know who you are. So Amori's mind is definitely in the right place for him to scale any height to reach his goals. To many his remarkable attractiveness is quite intimidating yet Amori's down-to-earth attitude repudiates any cause for apprehension. "You may see me one day in a t-shirt, khaki shorts, glasses, and hot shoes. I'm a nice laid-back, fun loving pretty person. I love to be comfortable but definitely something talked about in a good way." If you want to see more pretty pictures of this pretty boy then check them out below.

Beautifully Unhuman - Spotlight Harrison "Humannequin" Lovett
When I first met him, I didn't know what was more shocking--his apparent self-confidence and insistent desire for others to view his body or his obsession with the motifs à la Lady Gaga of fame, sex, fashion, and glamour. Harrison Pereze Bradley-Lovett, the 20-year-old self-titled "Humannequin" from Rue de Paradis, Abuja, Nigeria possesses strong inclination to the passionate and overtly sexual like the allure of candlelight to a fluttering moth in the night. His projects include working with James Nelson, Dirty Rock Me Photography, Faces by Emile, and Gem In I Entertainment. On the details of his often misunderstood aesthetic, Harrison states, "I am inspired by sex and how we can make it luxurious and tasteful--high society lifestyles, cosmetic perfection, my dreams, my past, and thoughts of the future. And most of all my inspiration comes from what is beautiful, strange, and unexpected." A "humannequin" is no doubt what Harrison is; his primary means of self expression comes from his body. He has no problems displaying in its clean, original form, and he equally if not more comfortable with ensconcing it in avant-garde pieces. Harrison sums up his personal style saying, "My style is definitely spontaneous, very hip, and detailed. I try to wear things that are flattering to my body, and to the eyes. I dress as if I am an open book, based on the season, my mood, or even where I may be(or may be going) at that time. All these things play apart in how I will tell my story. I love to dress out loud, you can basically call the pieces in my closet." An aspiring model, Harrison's self-possession definitely give him the ability to create artistic yet sensual photos. His favorite clothing items are "high wasted slim trousers, raw denim jeans, fine jewelry, vintage sunglasses, leather boots, metal studded coats, spikes, glitter, parfum, skin care, intimates, rare animal fur, racer back tanks, man bags". But I can say without a doubt that Harrison's favorite accessory is the one he shows off the most--his skin. Check out photos of Harrison below.

Hustler Lifetime Achievement Award - Jaureal Dillingham
You've met Jaureal Dillingham when I presented him in a spotlight in April with his new mixtape that is as scorching as the temperatures outdoors. Today I'm presenting him with a Hustler Lifetime Achievement Award. This rapper and self-proclaimed pretty boy has been juicing up his tank to keep his Hustler Craft flying high. Hailing from the nitty gritty of the streets of Chicago, Jaureal found himself surrounded by a plethora of hustlers and people looking for a quick way to get theirs. But Jaureal's precocious talent for rapping as well as his notable athletic ability steered him in a different direction for his aspirations. Having moved to Louisville, KY more than halfway through high school, Jaureal never gave up on his love of wordplay. His skills were thrust into the public spotlight when word of Jaureal's superlative skills in a freestyle met NBA figure Derek Anderson. And from there, the rest is history; Jaureal continues to promote his skills which are most definitely rivaling some already-signed rappers in the industry. His style is no less failing than his verbal skills, relying on an arsenal of urban style sense which gives him an inclination to more avant-garde, edgy, and urban abstract styles. More importantly as well, Jaureal has a fondness for advocating with youth and reaching out to adolescents in the community. From personal experience I can definitely say I'm one who has been impacted by the mind and words of Jaureal Dillingham. He is constantly thinking, constantly looking and reaching for possibilities, and attitude that will take him far. So check out the sets of Jaureal I've styled personally below and download his mixtape on his MySpace page here.

A Rose By Any Other Name - Spotlight Felicia Still
When I came upon this startlingly beautiful young starlet, I must say that I was a little intimidated even for a gentleman like myself. Never before have a met a young lady whose beautiful exterior matched her beautiful mind. Felicia Still, a student at the University of Louisville is giving young women all around the nation an opportunity to showcase what a true lady is and what she does. Hailing originally from Fort Carson, Colorado as the daughter of an army father, she considers herself a cosmopolitan girl, not really being able to find a place she can call her hometown. Now signed to Heyman Talent Agency, Felicia's past of participating in Fashion Bug fashion shows, doing church plays, and even a photo shoot with impressive Louisville image consultant Merika Rock, she feels it's beginning to pay off. On her own personal style, Still responds, "Classy, sophisticated, with a little edge thrown in there. I love wearing my pearls and sporting the Jackie-O Stepford Wife look. You can never go wrong when you dress like a lady. Sometimes I like to rock a leather jacket or bright colors to show I can wear all kinds of looks but most importantly being different is my style." Felicia definitely heard when Coco Chanel was quoted saying "Elegance is not the prerogative of those who have just escaped from adolescence but of those who have already taken control of their future". When she told me what her favorite item was, I was over the moon. "I absolutely love my heels. I strutted to class everyday in high school in my heels. I still strutt my stuff in them and plan on until Im 80. Some people say I have too many but I say you can never have enough." Her inspirations include her parents, her support, and her love of fashion. "I have so many people that believe in me and they drive me to keep going. And my love for fashion, I get excited talking about designers, new styles, and whats hot." A rarity among today's young women, Felicia is a charming, confident, and focused young lady and she is widely aware of what she wants to accomplish in life. I'm extending Felecia an invitation to the Flashy Life and believe me, it will be sent sealed with a kiss from a charming gentleman.

Talking Back - ImmaculateBacktalk.com
One of my friends in the blogging world, Brandyn Braden, a student at the International Academy of Design and Technology, is making waves in the world wide web after his fashion and lifestyle blog ImmaculateBacktalk. The blog is being nominated for Best Blog Design, Best New Blog, and Best Group Blog by the Black Weblog Awards. And rightly so with its streamlined and stylish style complemented by the emphatic orange logo proudly bearing the blog's name. The articles aren't word-laden which widens the blog's audience in a world where people have developed phobias of large blocks of text. His attention to rising stars in music also gives him an avenue to help others get publicity and have a chance to realize their own dreams. Braden's strong sense of humor and disdain for seriousness is evident in his blog as well in his real-life personality. The disclaimer on the home page is surprisingly candid yet its presence is understood by the content of the blog. It states, "This is a blog. That fact means nothing. It is essentially as it came from the keyboard: spontaneous, un-proofed, unrevised, and corrected afterward only when necessary to address mistakes that grossly effect the intent." Yet what sets Brandyn apart and what credits him as a serious blogger is his impressive articulation and presentation of his content. To him, his blog is his child; he receives the greatest sense of accomplishment when the lessons he places into his blog are returned back to others. If you haven't subscribed yet, then you most definitely will want to add his site to your blogroll.

Hitting All The Right Notes
You met my partner-in-crime Brittney last month when I did my spotlight on her and now she’s back in the limelight with her new blog, The Notes of Toni’s Life. A Broadcast Journalism major at Western Kentucky University, Brittney’s blog exhibits her love for politics, music, relationships, and Black culture. Brittney’s attention to detail and loyalty to the facts make her blog exceptionally strong and informative. She’s only a sophomore, but from the style and voice with which she uses to create a well-balance mélange of well-articulated opinions with well-researched current events, she makes a mature standing for herself. One of my favorite posts of on the blog was her assessment on the state of historically Black colleges and universities in America and about how the failure of the Black community to continue to convey their essential nature to Black history and the creation of Black leaders continues to cause Black students to look elsewhere for higher education. The Notes of Toni’s Life also provides for an excellent experience to get others especially Blacks to awaken their political consciousness. In a world where apathy continues to be the number one killer of the Black spirit, Brittney has lit a torch for herself and is keeping herself focused to be a guiding light for other Black Americans. Check out Brittney’s blog The Notes of Toni’s Life here.

The Fashion Kid - Markell Goode
When I extended the opportunity to one of my new friends, he was floored and excited at the prospect of being featured on Fashion Inc. Style Society. Rocking it out today in our style spotlight comes the edgy and avant-garde Markell Goode. A Business major at Kentucky State University, Markell's aspirations have always been held in the world of fashion. About his style, Markell states, "My style is forever changing; fashion isn't something that is done; it is lived. It is how you feel, a freedom of expression and comfort so my style can simply be a v-neck and a pair of Levi's". Standing only at 5'3, Markell is no doubt one to make waves when it comes to style, his flaming orange tuft of hair acting as a trademark for his unstoppable individuality. No stranger to the work of fashion shows either, Goode places his efforts into projects such as the upcoming Cleveland Asian Festival and throwing in a little philanthropy as well, the So Glam High Fashion Charity Event. That quality in Markell that is most illuminated is his infectious and unchanging optimism. In speaking about his own aesthetic, Markell answers, "Elegance is a question ofpersonality, more than ones clothing. Let's go beyond looking cute, be bold, beautiful, inspiring", and motivating. Live above It. LOVE, LIVE CREATE. This is my self made quote i live through. I hope to be all that and more inspiring others to believe in themselves. Lets see where the future will take me, I know it begins with a I can!" As for Markell, once he completes that transfer from Kentucky State University to Western Kentucky University's fashion merchandising program, we'll put him down for membership in the Flashy Life. Think about it Markell... Check out some more photos of Markell in action below.

He's Cocky - Rashad Benton
Today I'm spotlighting a 20-year-old student from Florida A&M University with a blazing and blossoming interest in fashion, Rashad Benton. Our meeting was pure serendipity; this interaction between sartorial enthusiasts beginning with a simple friend request on Facebook. This figure enveloped in an untterly fashionable ensemble of a raspberry purple oxford shirt with a complementary dark bow tie was enough to extend him an invitation to the Flashy Life. After all, Oscar Wilde said, "One should always play fairly when one has the winning cards". Benton's Tumblr page, which you can view here, is an amalgamation of the stream of consciousness of a rising star in fashion. His musings on new items to buy, social dealings, the life and times of fashion personalities all mesh to create an interesting view into a young talent's creativity and ideas. Rashad's style exhibits an ambition-chic affect that gives him a sophisticated, clean-cut, and intelligent aura he no doubt can back up. Check out some photos of Rashad below and visit his Tumblr, his Twitter, and his Facebook.

It's Brittney $#&*%...
Cause I do not accept any less...than someone just as real, as fabulous...and no one gets any more real or any more fabulous than my girl and honorary member of my pretty committee Brittney Carter from the real 'Ville, Louisville, Kentucky.. If you don't know, you better ask somebody--this girl's a graduate of the illustrious Louisville Male High School, got the AKA Miss Black Western Pageant under her belt, winning the award for having the highest G.P.A. of all the contestants: a 4.0., and being a Broadcast Journalism major she's just getting started. She's also writing songs for A. Hagan an up-and-coming R&B artist straight from Western (ATL look out) and this girl's giving Kandi Buruss a run for her money. Like I said, I only surround myself with real hustlers. No paper gangsters hanging around here. Yeah, if that ain't dedication, I don't know what is. This chick needs to be fire marshaled because she's setting fires in girl's eyes and boys hearts when she walks by. I'm writing a book: Everything I Needed to Know About Doin It Big I Learned From Brittney. I'm sure it will become a best seller because this girl's a waterfall hiding behind a pair of shades that make her look like a calm stream. Like I always say, the best products don't need to advertise. And this girl's PR campaign must be doing some serious damage cause her monopoly on the game's just getting started. She's got a new blog called The Notes of Toni's Life and once it gets rolling, don't be the last to get on the train. Check out more of this stellar starlet-in-the-making below.
